Blue Dahlia

Hi everyone! It's me, Tonya and I'm here to share a chest I created out of a Pringles can. Yep, that is right…a Pringles can. I looked on Pinterest and YouTube for inspiration and all I could find was cans decorated where the lid comes off and there was a few videos where both ends were cut off  of the can and then a straight line was drawn and cut from one end to another. Then the ends were traced onto chipboard, cut out and adhered to each end. Well I thought why can't you leave the ends on and just trace the "lid" onto the can and then cut? Well, I'm going to show you how to create a Pringle's chest using this month's featured Floral Collection from the Robin's Nest.

First you will need an empty and cleaned Pringles can and an empty paper towel roll which I used as my template to draw out the lines on the can. I cut the paper towel roll down to 8 3/8"x4 5/8".

I used  painter's tape to hold my template in place while I drew lines on the can for the lid opening.

Once the lines are drawn, remove the template and cut with a sharp box cutter…NOTE***BE VERY CAREFUL*** you do not want to cut yourself. Where the "lid" opens  barely run the blade along the line you drew. You don't want to cut through the container. Now slowly open and barely run the blade on the other side not cutting through the lid.

Now apply gesso to the inside, ends of the can and outside edges. Let dry and apply a second coat.

Next paint over the gesso and let dry. I started out with a lighter blue acrylic paint but changed my mind  since it didn't match the cardstock I was going to use. I used a navy acrylic paint.

I cut the Daisy Stripe Cardstock in two sections to fit the outside of the chest and two Splendid Circles. Once cut I adhered all pieces to the can. Also if you don't like the look of how the edges of your lid looks you can wrap a small pieces of cardstock around and adhere to the lid for a neater look.

Next I cut two pieces of  Black Daisy Glitter Stripe Specialty Paper to fit and adhered inside. I also glued ribbon, lace around the ends and bottom edge  of the opening and found the center of the lid and lip and punched a small hole for the twine and button closure.

For the "feet" I had originally wanted to use sewing bobbins but the container wouldn't sit right. Next idea was stack and glue buttons together and adhere to the bottom that didn't look right either. My last solution was use these pebbles that I had received in a swap. I wish I had all the same color but I guess it will do because it sits perfectly. :-) 

Also I covered the ends of the cardstock on the backside of the container with lace. It gives it a more finished look.

Next I cut from the Sky Blue Glitter Cardstock a large oval diecut which I embossed and lightly inked the edges and along the top. Also I cut from vellum a splendid circle which I adhered both the oval and circle off center of the container. I stacked buttons which I glued together and topped off with a sequin and dew drop to create the closure and adhered to the container. The twine I ran through the hole in the lip and tied off the end that is inside the container.

For me now comes the fun part…adding all the tulle, twine, buttons, sequins, bling and most of all flowers. I cut from the White of White Classic Glitter Swirl Cardstock the dahlia using the Sizzix die by the same name. I inked the edges of the flower with chalk ink, shaped and adhered together.
